Fight Over Dodgers Ownership is Fight Over Debt Ownership

It was only in May when a young couple was married in a wedding provided for them by many generous members of their community. The couple has a history together, which includes a daughter and some reported incidents of violence. But their love for each other apparently outweighed everything else, and when the wife shared that she was diagnosed with leukemia, the couple lived for the moment and got married.

Today, however, the couple is on the brink of a child custody dispute because the husband claims that his wife lied about her cancer diagnosis in order for the wedding to happen. He accuses his wife of manipulating him into marrying her and the public into sending the couple gifts for the wedding because they were sympathetic about her alleged illness.

In a previous post, we shared the story of billionaire Donald Bren's adult children who were suing their father in order to collect the child support they believe they deserve. Christie and David Bren, 18 and 22, argue that their father owes them an estimated $130 million in child support, and that the support Bren has offered them throughout their lives has not been fair based on the amount of money he makes and spends in his own everyday life.

The jury, however, was not convinced by the Bren children's argument and ruled that Bren is not obligated to pay the $130 million in retroactive child support. That was likely a difficult ruling for Christie and David Bren to hear, and according to reports about the trial, their father's responses to certain questions were also probably difficult to face.

As we have written in previous posts, the hearing wherein Jamie and Frank McCourt argue over the ownership of the L.A. Dodgers was scheduled to begin Aug. 30. The trial date has come and gone, and the McCourts have been in court over the course of the week, delving into the details of the couple's marital property.

What has come to light in the last couple of days has less to do with the couple's marital property agreement, but it is still important regarding the future ownership of the Dodgers. Financial reports about the Dodgers' financial standing have been made public, and it sounds like the McCourts are fighting over a team that has more debt than value at this point.
